TRACK PREMIERE: The By Gods “Good Lie”

BY

If you’ve ever logged onto Facebook only to be sickened by that one friend that insists on documenting every single thing that happens to them in order to prove how #happy and #blessed they are, “Good Lie” by The By Gods is the song for you.

Whereas January’s album, Get On Feelings, was a solid, sincere throwback to 90’s rock, the Nashville trio take a confrontational turn with their latest track. Singer George Pauley demands, “Tell me ’bout your friends and your wedding day/ Tell me how you’re blessed in every way,” before pulling back the curtain on all the positivity, practically sneering the words: “Tell me ’bout the good life, yeah it’s such a good lie.” The By Gods have figured out the perfect formula for catchy songs: repetitive riffs and rhythms that build on tone and texture, making the track memorable and immediately recognizable.

Speaking of repetition that isn’t so catchy, how annoying is that friend we were talking about? They’re probably instagraming their lunch right now. Ugh. Get ready to vent by listening to “Good Lie” below, and order The By God’s upcoming Phone Calls EP ahead of its July 8 release date here.

TRACK PREMIERE: Merrily James “Another Day”

Merrily James

London-born, Seattle-raised and now here in Brooklyn –  songstress Merrily James has a brand new track titled “Another Day” off her upcoming debut EP, “Opia,” set to drop June 3.

Since in Brooklyn, Merrily has collaborated with local favorites such as Brian Kelsey (Parlour Tricks) and Zac Taylor (American Authors) and even shared a stage with industry icons such as Bobby McFerrin and Phillip Bailey (Earth, Wind, & Fire). But we’re going to talk about her here.

“Another Day” is a comfortingly catchy indie pop tune, that along with being an impeccable selection for your summer playlist, shows off more impressive vocals than we’re used to hearing from up and comers. Her talent combined with knack for writing songs, that are delicious as ear candy yet resonate with realities and truth, is sure to secure grand things to come.

Merrily’s EP release show will be held at Rockwood Music Hall Sunday, June 5 with special guest performers Ross Clark from St Lucia and Lily Cato from Parlour Tricks. See you there, and listen to “Another Day” below.

TRACK PREMIERE: Atlas Engine “Everest”

Atlas Engine Featured

Celebrate Friday with a track premiere from Atlas Engine, “Everest,” from his upcoming EP “After the End.”

Atlas Engine is the solo venture of Nick LaFalce, formerly of BRAEVES. With this new project, LaFalce undertakes the task of writing, singing, performing each instrument, and producing to conceive a skillfully crafted effort that is truly all his own.

With LaFalce belting out lyrics such as, “Something in the air I’m breathing must be forever changed/So tell me what I have to fear now,” over a stunning melody, the track emanates a sense of freedom, and an exciting anticipation for what’s to come.

The full EP is set for release on June 3.  New Yorkers, you can catch Atlas Engine’s live debut (for free!) at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 on May 19.

TRACK PREMIERE: RYAL “Wish”

ryal_rachel-brennecke_highres

RYAL is Jacque Ryal, an alt-pop artist from San Diego, CA who moved to New York when she was 18. Although her earlier work was considerably darker and drew comparisons to groups such as Portishead, RYAL has challenged herself to write songs that were both optimistic and timeless on her upcoming release.

Though her new music aspires to be happier, I sense the same longing in the song “Wish” as I feel everyday from November to April: What happened to summer? Why did summer have to go away? It helps that the track invokes a trip to the beach; along with producer Aaron Nevezie, she’s created a bouncy, but focused beat with splashes of tropical guitar and synths that will have you missing the good days when the sun didn’t set before 6pm: “We had a good love/ Not just a summer fling…I miss you bad when the sun falls on to its knees.” Her words capture the bittersweetness of a fleeting romance, while the music reflects the brightness and happiness she experienced before she knew it was gone.

The RYAL EP will be available on February 19, but we have the exclusive stream below.

TRACK PREMIERE: Emi Meyer “Galaxy’s Skirt (Soul Catalyst Remix)”

Galaxy's Skirt

Emi Meyer‘s debut album, Curious Creature came out in 2009 and reached #1 on Japan’s iTunes Jazz Charts, and lead her to be crowned as iTunes Japan’s Best New Artist. Now America has caught up to speed, and AudioFemme is here to premiere her new track, “Galaxy’s Skirt (Soul Catalyst Remix).” It’s jazz, but with the most delightful tropical pop twist which makes it the best song to dance to, alone out of happiness or out with a lover, that we’ve heard in some time. Emi comes from an interesting background full of accolades. Born in Kyoto to a Japanese mother and American father, she moved to Seattle as a child, and went on to win the 2007 Seattle-Kobe Jazz vocalist competition. Now, she’s kicking ass with her music being featured on the likes of MTV’s “Awkward.”

Her upcoming album Galaxy’s Skirt: Deluxe Edition is out December 4. You can catch her before then playing New York’s Club Bonafide Friday, November 13.

Upgrade your work day with the dance-infused jazz track below.

TRACK PREMIERE: Jojee “Unravel Me”

Jojee

Our girl Jojee is back with a sultry track “Unravel Me” and we get to share it with you first. The moody number invokes the same sensuality as a candle-lit stoned shower, smoke and steam obscurring skin on skin. The “future soul” artist has a kaleidoscope of sounds that all zoom into the same focal point claimed by R&B in the 2015 musical landscape. Relax and allow yourself to come undone with the latest – “Unravel Me” slows things down to the tempo you want to bath in every beat.

Indulge in the heady high of “Unravel Me” below. The song is produced by Mickey Valen.

TRACK PREMIERE: Micky Blue “Champagne Reign”

unnamed

Anything described as “haunted pop” has already won my heart from the get go. On this day, Wednesday August 19th of 2015 AudioFemme is proud to premiere “Champagne Reign” by New York darling Micky Blue. “‘Champagne Reign’ is about how far some people are willing to go for the glamor and fame. I think you can still reach your dreams without “selling your soul” or loosing yourself, it’s a much harder and longer road but I think the payoff can be much greater,” says Micky.

It’s a sparking track that will translate easily to the dance floor, but with a message that may cause the dancer to look for the realness of the night, the eyes of the person you’re dancing with, and the thrill of being young and free and creating memories that could sell a movie script – without worrying how big the opening weekend would be. It sings of the delight of the glow of the sparklers, not the price tag that comes with the champagne bottle they appear with.

Listen to “Champagne Reign” below.

TRACK PREMIERE: Sara Curtin “Careless”

Sara Curtin
Sara Curtin, one half of the DC folk-pop duo The Sweater Set just released the single “Careless” from her forthcoming sophomore solo album Michigan Lilium, and AudioFemme is pleased to premiere it. Strummed like the folk star she is, the song both sounds pretty yet carries some seriously emotionally intelligent lyrics (“Boy I’m troubled, I should know). It’s smart yet delicious, like a kale smoothie as yummy as a milkshake. Listen to “Careless” below.

What if childhood never had to end? Despite an increased need to clean and an ugly habit of paying bills, I’ve learned it doesn’t have to. We have artists using their madness to keep the world beautiful for those who walk the line (and those who don’t). And sometimes, to keep things a little more funky, that art is inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Their new track “Leonardo” might have a muse that’s a crime fighting giant reptile from your childhood bedroom, but the song inspired is a mature and moving listen displaying the emotional insight and talent grown ups can make when they don’t take themselves too seriously.

Howth is releasing their new album Trashy Milky Nothing Town on June 2nd via Bandcamp, and is available for pre-order. In the meantime, listen to “Leonardo” below. And – don’t miss their premiere show June 2nd at Shea Stadium.

TRACK PREMIERE: Alanna Clarke “Raw Emotion”

Alanna Clarke

At the age of 15, preternaturally mature Canadian songstress Alanna Clarke decided to forgo a conventional high school education, along with all the social trappings of one’s typical adolescent arrival, and instead opted to become a touring musician. To be that sure, that young of your life’s calling can imply one of two things: immense myopia or immense, uncontainable talent. Fortunately for her, Clarke is in possession of the latter. Now 23, she has years of experience writing, producing and performing under her belt, and has graced us with a brand new track, “Raw Emotion”, out today.

While the title straightforwardly denotes the driving force inside of young people – raw emotion – the song itself is anything but twee. A stripped down guitar melody opens the track’s first few bars, with Clarke’s ethereal vocals mooring and uplifting the listener simultaneously. After the intro makes it clear to us that she is a powerhouse, the song explodes into an electropop ballad with an infectious beat and catchy electronic drums, though never over the top so much as to take away focus from Clarke’s voice, which is at once soulful, ecstatic and grounded the whole way through. Look out for big things from this girl. In the meantime, take a listen to “Raw Emotion” below.

TRACK PREMIERE: Stroamata “A Fantasy”

It’s 2015. If you’re reading this you survived and have made it to strut around the sun another year. You can swipe right and order up sex quicker than an egg roll from the Chinese place next door. It’s (at least in Brooklyn) culturally cool to have a partially shaved head but a bushy vagina, and mainstream media is finally attacking celebrities who say they aren’t a feminist.

What I’m trying to say is that we’re in the goddamn future, even though AC/DC is indeed headlining Coachella.

Now that the cultural context is set, let me go ahead and premiere the self-proclaimed “future rock” band, Brooklyn-based Stroamata‘s single “A Fantasy.” There may be an ironic tone to that title, as the sounds of the in-your-face song pulled me out of my day dreams into radical acceptance of now, for which I thank them. It’s good to get out of your head every now and again.

“Oh no no, I’ve had it all wrong. Life’s not short, it goes on and on…” the track warns.

With DJ Shadow-inspired industrial beats pressed through an alt-rock machine, the female-fronted group thrashes and tears to the front of the climacteric angst of the current musical moment kids crave still reeling from the shit show that was 2014.

Enjoy “A Fantasy” below.

TRACK PREMIERE: Kaitlin Riegel “When I Fall Asleep”

Unfortunately for the impatient; Kaitlin Riegel’s sophomore EP, System, isn’t set for release until February 10th. Luckily, we have a sneak peak of a new track from the New Zealand artist. “When I Fall Asleep” is the softer, stripped-down B-side of her catchy, R&B single “System.” It’s produced by James Yuill of Moshi Moshi, who has worked with Hot Chip, Florence & the Machine, and Kate Nash. You can preorder System here, and listen to “When I Fall Asleep” below.

Riegel was born in Portland, then started her music career as a pre-teen hanging around Massachusetts coffee shops. She later relocated to New Zealand where she currently works from. This internationally-minded artist has also recorded in Berlin (with Simon Berkelman of Philadelphia Grand Jury) and more recently in London, and credits her exposure to diverse environments and culture with shaping her unique style and sound. She has a strong foundation in classical and jazz genres, which she augments with contemporary R&B.
