AF 2018 IN REVIEW: Our Favorite Albums and Singles of the Year

Here we are again! As the new year approaches, it’s time to look back and take stock of the albums and singles that defined this moment in music history. 2018 was an eclectic year, to say the least, and there are a lot of new names on the list: Tirzah, Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Noname, King Princess, and Kali Uchis all had phenomenal debuts this year, not to mention the inimitable Cardi B, who made good on the promise of last year’s smash hit “Bodak Yellow” with Invasion of Privacy in April. There were established artists who still managed to surprise us, whether in the form of unearthed Prince demos, The Arctic Monkeys’ loungey sci-fi concept album, Tim Hecker introducing us to ancient Japanese court music, Dev Hynes making his most personal Blood Orange record yet, or Lil Wayne finally dropping Tha Carter V. And then there are those artists who fall somewhere in between, their ascendant careers a thrill to watch as 2018 saw them finally hit their stride. US Girls. Yves Tumor. serpentwithfeet. And perhaps most spectacularly, Mitski and Janelle Monáe.

As each of our writers (and editors, too) created their own mini-lists, those were two names that kept cropping up, and there’s no doubt you’ve seen them on just about every year-end list on the interwebs. If there’s any chance you haven’t heard Be The Cowboy or Dirty Computer, by all means, fire up that Spotify Premium post haste. But the recommendations here are as diverse as our writers themselves, so we hope you’ll take time to explore some of the lesser-known, hardly hyped artists we’ve highlighted, too – and keep your eyes peeled for more year-end coverage as we cruise in to 2019.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Cardi B “Bartier Cardi” & More

Photographer turned fashion star turned director Petra Collins is a perfect artistic match for stripper turned reality TV star turned music tycoon Cardi B. The two internet sensations have risen to the top of their male dominated industries, and their latest collaboration on Cardi’s new single “Bartier Cardi” is the perfect female response to how the world of art is changing, and how the feminine perspective is beginning to take hold at the upper echelon of pop culture.

Cardi and Collins first collaborated in January, on the cover of CR Fashion Book Issue 12. Collins’ identifiable style, which has become renowned in the world of fashion and art photography, is a soft, glowing, diamond studded take on the female gaze. When in front of Collins’ lens, Cardi herself takes on a softer look, without sacrificing her strength as a powerhouse performer. It’s a side of Cardi her fans may not have seen before. And with her much-anticipated debut album Invasion of Privacy dropping tomorrow, April 6th, there are sure to be many sides of Cardi we have yet to see.

In a brand new video for “Broken Clocks,” off last year’s Ctrl, SZA reminds us that it’s still summer somewhere, even though we’re currently stuck in the longest winter of all time. Follow through with your viewing for a plot twist end to the woozy joint.

A Vacation in Hell, the latest album from Flatbush Zombies, comes out April 6th. The crew created a medley video for the album’s release, which chronicles each being visited by their own worst fan.

Yep! They’re back. The indie-rock favorites, who haven’t released an album since 2015, will release 7 on May 11th via Sub Pop and Bella Union. “Dark Spring” is the third single from the record, following “Lemon Glow” and “Dive;” the abstract compilation of black and white images that accompanies it creates a textured ride through chaos and form.

Billie Eilish collaborates with the YouTube channel Colors on this stripped down video. The minimal aesthetic Colors maintains across their platform allows the young singer-songwriter to truly shine in the absence of an embellished production.

    Despite a bombastic performance from Kendrick Lamar, a rallying #MeToo speech from Janelle Monae, and an incredibly emotional Kesha moment, last Sunday’s Grammys disappointed in a giant way. Hip-hop got shut out from the major categories again (this time by Bruno Mars) and women were all but ignored, claiming only eleven of the 84 trophies. Best new artist winner Alessia Cara was the only solo female to win a Grammy. She beat out SZA, who despite being the most nominated lady of the night, went home empty-handed. In a night filled with multiple appearances from U2, Sting, and Shaggy, many wondered why Lorde (the only female nominee for Album of the Year) did not perform. Following the show it was revealed that the Melodrama artist was never offered a solo slot, only an appearance in a Tom Petty tribute, which she understandably turned down. Asked for comment on the matter, Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich told Variety, “We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album. There’s no way we can really deal with everybody.” His idiocy was quickly eclipsed by Recording Academy president, Neil Portnow. When asked about the lack of female representation in the awards, Portnow made the following tone deaf statement:

    “It has to begin with… women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level… [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome…”

    Many were not happy with his comments, especially his suggestion for women to “step up.” Pink and Charli XCX were among those that took to Twitter to lambast Portnow; others followed suit by using #GrammySoMale to voice their disapproval. On Thursday, in response, Portnow announced the establishment of a new task force that will investigate gender bias at The Grammys and the Recording Academy. On the same day, music-business lawyer Rosemary Carroll spearheaded a group of female music executives’ call for Portnow step down. In an open letter, the executives state, “Today we are stepping up and stepping in to demand your resignation.”

  • Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl RevengeOn Sunday night, Justin Timberlake returns to the Super Bowl for the halftime performance. The move has prompted many to ask “What about Janet?” It was fourteen years ago that JT and the “Rhythm Nation” singer shocked television audiences when Timberlake revealed Jackson’s breast at the end of their 2004 halftime performance of “Rock Your Body.” While Timberlake’s career has continued to flourish, Jackson was virtually blacklisted from the industry after the event.Though Jackson won’t be present at the Super Bowl, she is finally making her deserved comeback. Coachella organizers Goldenvoice have announced Jackson as one of the the top billers of the 2018 Panorama music festival. From July 27 – 29, she’ll headline along with The Killers, The Weekend, SZA, Father John Misty, St. Vincent, The War on Drugs, Due Lipa, Gucci Mane, Cardi B, The XX, Fleet Foxes, Migos, Odessa, and David Byrne.
  • Speaking of David Byrne…

    Byrne made news for several events this week. The Talking Heads founder is releasing a new album, American Utopia, in March, and yesterday he released a playlist in response to a certain political figure. “The Beautiful Shitholes” is a collection of tracks from the likes of Amadou & Mariam, Orchestra Baobab, and Calle 13. Byrne released the following partial statement along with the playlist:“I assume I don’t have to explain where the shithole reference came from.Here’s a playlist that gives just the smallest sample of the depth and range of creativity that continues to pour out of the countries in Africa and the Caribbean.   • Other Highlights

    After a couple of years of heavy touring with a live band and the exit of Rhye co-founder Robin Hannibal, Mike Milosh is back with Blood, the follow up to Rhye’s 2013 debut, Woman. “Count To Five” is the first official video off of the sophomore release. Albert Hammond Jr.’s upcoming album, Francis Trouble, is out March 9th via Red Bull Records. On Thursday night he performed new track, “Muted Beatings,” on Conan. Chvrches released a clip this week for fresh single, “Get Out.” The Scottish trio will play Governor’s Ball in NYC on June 3rd. The tracklist for the soundtrack of upcoming Marvel movie Black Panther has been released; Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar co-produced the soundtrack which features SZA, Khalid, Jorja Smith, Jay Rock, and more. The first single off the album, “Pray For Me,” is out now and features Lamar and The Weekend. The soundtrack drops February 9th. King Krule is asking listeners to submit photos inspired by the cover of his latest album, The Ooz. The collection of pics are being published on a new Instagram account and prizes may be involved. Flatbush Zombies have three new projects in the works. The rappers’ sophomore album, Vacation in Hell is out April 6th, their touring life is chronicled in Building a Ladder, a new documentary out April 2nd, and group member Erick “The Architect” Elliot is releasing Arcstrumentals2 on February 16th. Nas performed his seminal album, Illmatic, with the National Symphony Orchestra. The concert airs on PBS tonite at 9pm. Noughties nostalgia is fulfilled on “Get It,” a new track from Missy Elliot, Kelly Rowland, and Busta Rhymes. The copyright floodgates have been opened! Kanye West and Solange are both being sued by Prince Phillip Mitchell for unsolicited use of his song “If We Can’t Be Lovers.” West sampled the track for 2007 song, “Everything I Am,” Knowles used it in her leaked 2008 release, “Fuck The Industry.”

LIVE REVIEW: Flatbush Zombies 12/3

When I told my best friend that I was going to the Flatbush Zombies show on Tuesday, she accused me of being late to the party.  Well, I’m only three years late.  That’s just about punctual at my pace.  My buddies have been going to their shows for about 2 years, and it somehow took me this long to catch them live.  I would like to point out that I was out of the country for a cumulative amount of 1.5 years, if that’s any consolation (for myself).  I’d also like to point out that I’m incredibly lame. I’m also not “with it.”  I’d even go so far as to say I am “without it.

Not only was this my first Flatbush Zombies show, this was my first hip-hop show period, unless you count that one I went to on accident when I was 12, but I don’t.  In all my pre-show excitement, I didn’t really realize that it was my first hip-hop show until I was squashed between testosterone-loaded teens and it occurred to me: “I have no idea what to expect from this.”  I began asking myself a series of embarrassing questions like: “how do people dance at hip-hop shows?”  “Will there be ‘grinding,’ ‘twerking,’ or ‘freaking?’”  “Is ‘freaking’ even a thing?”  “Am I really this much of a herb?”  Yes.  Yes I am.

In any case, this herb had a great time.  Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg opened the show, spinning all the best in old school hip-hop.  He did get a little preachy with his old-timer hip-hop sermon, but that’s to be expected.  Following Rosenberg was Spanish Harlem native Bodega Bamz, a.k.a. PAPI.  He made sense as an opener for a few reasons, namely his NYC origin and recent collaboration with Flatbush Zombies on “Thrilla.”  Bodega Bamz put on an energetic performance and has a surprisingly large following.  There were more than a few kids next me that knew all his lyrics in both English and Spanish.

Flatbush Zombies more than filled their slot as the headliners.  Performing one of the last shows of their pan US tour promoting the new Better Off Dead mixtape, they didn’t pull a single punch.  The show was perfect from start to finish, to the point that it seemed choreographed and spontaneous at the same time.  The energy of their set was undeniably visceral and downright exciting.  The experience was doubly compelling because for me, it was a new one, and moreover, because the crowd engulfing me was so energized by the music.  Everyone seemed to know every beat, breakdown, and lyric (except for me of course).  Bodega Bamz joined the FBZ boys for their second to last song, and they reappeared for an encore, inviting the crowd on stage.  The whole show was a fucking blast.

As I left, a bit smelly and a lot sweaty, I thought of something:

“Can someone be fashionably late to the party?”

Probably not, but who gives a shit?
